After the storm, the snooze. We are treated to a story of two tortured souls. June is by divine decree required to be involved in absolutely everything happening in Gilead and so is, of course, an accessory to her demise. Firstly, she cruelly berates Eleanor after the hysterical Mrs Lawrence almost blurts out the plan to fly the 52 kids out of Gilead. Secondly, and far more seriously, June declines to intervene upon discovering her sometime ally and friend dying of an overdose.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 episode 13 ‘Mayday’ finale review: A rebuttal to the naysayers
The Handmaid's Tale ends with a bang in its season 3 finale, but it's a mixed bang at best. The season 3 finale of The Handmaid's Tale sees June succeed at her plan to rescue a whole bunch of children from Gilead, shipping them via freight plane to Canada where they're welcomed with open arms despite the Canadians being very worried about just one child, Nichole, throughout much of the season. June herself, of course, doesn't make it out. She ends up in a gunfight with a Guardian and, through some deceit, gets the better of him—but only after being shot. Why didn't she just pretend to be shot earlier and then shoot him with her concealed pistol? I suppose it's so they could have that scene with the Handmaids carrying her on their makeshift stretcher, and put her in yet a more dire pickle than before, now that she's wounded on top of everything else.

Posted on Wednesday, August 7th, by Caroline Cao. Miraculously, June has gotten away with the murder of Winslow, though the consequence of his disappearance echoes throughout Gilead with Commanders assuming he had been captured by Canada too. Gilead is cracking. Gilead Commanders are intent on closing the borders and getting eager to blow things up. Meanwhile, the Waterfords are detained by the Americans in Canada.
How many times have we seen June reborn? Four, maybe five? This beautifully crafted drama has the expertise to conjure up any emotion required. Anger, triumph, pity, pride. It knows the recipe for them all. As a result, you might leave an episode like fired up as intended, but with a nagging sense of dissatisfaction. This was June back in the ring, having remembered who was the real opponent.
